This module reviews the principles of operation and how to use radiation detection instruments for monitoring radiation and radioactive contamination. It reviews the principle means of detecting radiation: gas ionization, scintillation, optical- and thermo-luminescence, and photographic emulsions. It also gives examples of common types of detectors available to you and how they are to be used in conducting radiation surveys. Students taking this course should have completed "Radiation Safety Refresher Training - Fundamentals" or have an understanding of atoms, atomic structure, radioactivity, types of radiation, and radiation interaction with matter.
